RECYCLED BEAUTY
YEAR: 1997.
GROUP EXHIBITION: »The Concept of the Beautiful«, Gold Medal Sculptors’ Competition 1997, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark.
MATERIALS: Video: master Hi8, monitor, carpet, textile, water cooler and sign.
On the floor lies a thick, white quilt cut into a circle. A small monitor stands on the quilt showing a sequence of a plant sprouting. The sprout repeatedly moves up through the soil in a loop. On the quilt, opposite the monitor, is a water cooler for visitors to drink from.
On the floor outside the quilt, a pictogram has been mounted, instructing visitors to remove their shoes before stepping onto the quilt.
The work takes as its starting point the concept of the beautiful and the circle is used for its beautiful harmonious shape. The circle also represents a cycle and the feminine body. The circle, the water and the sprout are incorporated into a visual cycle on the quilt. The video displays the sprout as a metaphor for life, continuously regenerating. Visitors can drink from the water cooler and hereby participate in the installation. The circle creates a connection between visitors and meaning.
