HUS OG DYR_HOUSE AND CREATURE

YEAR: 2000.

GROUP EXHIBITION: »Ambassaden«, Kørners Kontor, Den Nordatlantiske Brygge, Copenhagen, Denmark.

MATERIALS: 6x6 colour negative, colour copy, dialogue text, wood, and grass turf.

HOUSE AND CREATURE consists of a wooden overhang jutting out from the wall of the exhibition room. Grass turf is laid out on the floor, in front of and under the overhang. A framed colour photograph is mounted on the wall underneath. The photo shows a model of a house with the same overhang, standing on a lawn. Next to the photograph hangs a dialogue text. The dialogue is taking
place inside the house on the photo. The text is a dialogue between Anja Franke and Kaj Aage Drafenharden. The dialogue is about her seeing some kind of creature stuck on his scalp. He panics but at the same time sees a person looking in at them. In this case the person is the visitor reading the dialogue.

HOUSE AND CREATURE focuses on dialogue, narrative, title, the physical object and the observer and on how the visitors and the various parts of the installation make up the entirety of the work.

DIALOGUE

HUS OG DYR_HOUSE AND CREATURE

The house is surrounded by tall grass and consists of a single room. There is an overhang outside. In the room two people face one another.

ANJA FRANKE [AF]:
»There’s something on your head ... !«
KAJ AaGE DRAFENHARDEN [KAaD]:
»!!?«
AF:
»It looks like some kind of creature.«
KAaD:
»Oh no!!!«
[She takes a step towards him and stands on the tips of her
toes. She tries to wave the creature away from his scalp.]
AF:
»It’s got a good grip ... !«
[He tries to shake the creature off his head by moving it
rapidly back and forth.]
KAaD:
»Is it gone?«
AF:
»No, it’s well and truly stuck ... looks like
a beetle ... only bigger.«
[He feels something moving on his scalp. He tries to remove
it with his hand.]
KAaD:
»Is that creature still stuck?«
AF:
»Yes ... and ... ehrm ... it’s sort of blueish-black ... hairy legs.«
[He bends his head towards the floor.]
KAaD:
»Get rid of it!«
[He stands – head downwards – turning his eyes
towards the door. He sees a person outside looking in.]
KAaD:
»There’s someone outside, staring ... «
AF:
» ...!«
