FICTION IN SPACE

FIKTION I RUM_FICTION IN SPACE

YEAR: 2000.

SOLO EXHIBITION: Esbjerg Central Library, Esbjerg, Denmark.

MATERIALS: Black-and-white 24x36 mm negative, black-and-white photostat. Video: master Hi8, monitor, playback device. Sound and dialogue text.

FICTION IN SPACE consists of black-and-white photostats showing a model of a two-room apartment. Next to the photostats a text has been mounted in the same format. The text is a long dialogue between Anja Franke and Kaj Aage Drafenharden. A video of Anja Franke reading the same dialogue is running simultaneously. Black-and-white floral wallpaper has been mounted in niches next to the photostats.

FICTION IN SPACE is a staging of a sequence of events played out between Anja Franke and the fictitious male character of Kaj Aage Drafenharden. The photostats show a model of what was then Anja Franke’s apartment. The dialogue is about Anja Franke and Kaj Aage Drafenharden who are about to move in together into the apartment in which Anja Franke herself is living at the time. It is a fiction of everyday life and the events that can ensue when two
people move in together. The dialogue consists of interruptions from telephone calls, statistical surveys with hidden advertisements, neighbours chattering, joint decisions on the purchase of a settee, little lies, friends, jealousy, eroticism, emotions, sex, desire and practical
solutions. The narrative functions as a set of mental mirrors in which the audience can recognize their own reality in relation to this staging of Anja Franke’s fantasy of everyday life.
