APPLE AIR YEAR: 1996. GROUP EXHIBITION: »Out of Shape«, ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj, Denmark. MATERIALS: Digital animation, wind sounds, monitor, VHS-player, green plastic curtain and iron. A transparent green plastic curtain hangs from a round iron pole in the ceiling of the exhibition space. The point at which the green curtain is placed is the focal point of the architecture and the entire expression of the exhibition space. Behind the green curtain a monitor has been positioned, playing a video with sounds. The video shows a digital animation of a Golden Delicious apple. The apple splits and becomes two. One apple flies out of the picture and the remaining apple splits once again. The accompanying sound is that of the rushing wind. APPLE AIR is a fantasy created as a conception in a physical space where nature and culture are no longer separate but merge into one another. The apples on the video look like clones, metaphors for diseased cells, splitting of their own accord ad infinitum. The public can walk behind the green plastic curtain and experience air that feels physically different because it is enclosed. The sound of the wind is heard, but it is difficult to discern whether it is natural coming from above, under the roof, or artificial coming from the video. BACK TO PROJECTS |
